April 1998 marked the beginning of construction on the Prime Millennium Building located next to the executive office complex for Prime Trucking Company Inc., owned by Robert and Lawana Low.
The Killian Group of Companies Inc. acted as general contractor for the 65,000-square-foot project, which is now nearing completion.
According to Killian project manager Rich Brumfield, the ultramodern building contains a full-size gymnasium, exercise room, restaurant, movie theater, day care center, gift shop, sleeping quarters for drivers, a clinic and many other amenities.
Robert Low said the estimated cost of the project was $10.5 million.
The two-story building is built of structural steel and cast-in-place concrete. Aluminum-paneled columns accent a main lobby, which features a circular metal-and-glass-panel spiral staircase.
The building's exterior was designed to blend in with the trucking company's office complex, which is located next door at 2740 N. Mayfair Ave. and was built several years earlier.
According to Larry Eakins, architect with Slone Architects Inc., "We went through three different designs before we settled on one." The design features a circular courtyard with covered tables for outside dining, a fountain, raised flower beds, landscaping and small running waterways as focal points.
Finish work in the basement level has recently been completed to accommodate a massage room, tanning room and hair salon, Brumfield said. The first and second levels were completed in January 2000.
Brumfield said the complex was built to enable Prime employees to relax and unwind, and provide a place to bring their children, while also enhancing their ability to meet their personal and professional goals.
