Greene County Clerk Richard Struckhoff has rescheduled the city primary election that would have held today for Feb. 22, citing weather-related concerns.
Struckhoff made the call Feb. 4, after City Council unanimously supported his petition to combine the primary ballot with the April 5 general election ballot. The Court of Appeals, however, denied the request, but agreed to move the election two weeks back in light of winter weather circumstances.
“Several polling places are still blocked by snow from this week’s blizzard, and with more snow in the forecast, I can’t insure these polling places would be safe and accessible by next week,” Struckhoff said in a Feb. 4 news release.
Indeed, Springfield Business Journal's
media partner KSPR has predicted another round of snow this week, particularly tonight and early Wednesday.
State law gives the county clerk the ability to petition a panel of judges from the Court of Appeals to reschedule or relocate an election due to disaster, according to the release.
The primary election will limit City Council General Seat C and Zone 3 candidates down to two in preparation for the April general election.
For General Seat C, the candidates are Arthur Hodge Sr., Christopher Donegan and incumbent Doug Burlison.
For Zone 3, the candidates are Jerry Compton, who was appointed to fill the position when Ralph Manley resigned in 2009, Reggie Duke II and Stephen Keith Pennington.
