The traditional view of marriage is still kicking – with a twist.
According to data collected by Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor polls, younger Americans are enthusiastic about same-sex unions but also are very open to cohabitation and casual romances.
For instance, 74 percent of all respondents said marriage was still a meaningful institution. In a story on the findings by The Atlantic, views on marriage also are different by age category. Two out of three younger participants said marriage was still relevant and led to a happier, healthier, more fulfilled life, but three-fourths of older participants felt that marriage still had an important place in society.
One thing the youth and their elders distinctly agree on is the ideal age to get married: Roughly 64 percent of both age categories said it’s 25-30 years old, according to The Atlantic. Finances are a different story, though. A strong 85 percent of young respondents said having your life financially together before having kids was incredibly important, while only 67 percent of older Americans agreed.
