Political lines split on minimum wage issue

Posted online
Missouri’s Democratic party announced this morning its support of increasing the state’s minimum wage, just days after Gov. Matt Blunt and other Republicans expressed opposition.

On Nov. 7, Missouri voters will decide whether to increase the state’s minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.50. The ballot issue is referred to as Proposition B.

The federal wage minimum is $5.15. There are 23 states with minimum wages higher than the federal wage.

Democrats say they are advocating for the families of the 42,000 Missourians who are making minimum wage.

“Missouri’s workers have waited far too long for a raise,” said Roger Wilson, Missouri Democratic Party chairman, in today’s news release.

Blunt has said that the wage increase would harm job growth and economic development, a position supported by Associated Industries of Missouri, a statewide business trade association of more than 1,200 employers. AIM also supported Blunt’s Quality Jobs Act.

“Nearly 45,000 new jobs have been created in Missouri as a result of Gov. Blunt’s bold moves to bolster business,” AIM President Gary Marble said in a news release issued Friday. “It would be a shame to start taking steps backward.”

State auditor Republican candidate Sandra Thomas also opposes Proposition B.[[In-content Ad]]
