Polartech Services Inc., based in Houston, Texas, has chosen Springfield as the North American distribution hub for its PolarShield product, according to Bob Fry, northern representative for the company.

Besides the Springfield office, the company has recently set up sales offices in California, Washington, Alabama, Georgia, Wisconsin and Mexico City, Fry said.

PolarShield is a polarized refrigerant-oil additive, or PROA.

The product is non-carcinogenic and does not put any additional restraints on waste-oil disposal, according to a recent company bulletin.

In the early 1980s, two retired physicists from Dupont teamed up with a professor of tribology (the study of lubrication) to develop the product. It was tested extensively by Texas A&M in 1989 and patented by the inventors in 1990.

According to a release from Polartech, the U.S. Department of Energy evaluated and approved the product in 1995. The Department of Energy noted a significant savings of energy consumption in units tested.

Introduced into the systems of coolers, air conditioners and heat-pump units, PolarShield magnetically bonds to metal surfaces, reducing friction and wear.

It increases metal's resistance to oxidation, increases conventional refrigerant oil's ability to lubricate, and reduces seal degradation, according to company studies.

"Magnetism always works," Fry said.

Fry and his associates recently finished a demonstration of the product with a local supermarket chain, reducing the company's power consumption by 26.8 percent.

As a result, the Missouri Grocers Association will endorse the product for use by its member stores statewide.

PolarShield saves the consumer money because it makes the system cool quicker and therefore run for fewer hours. It also makes systems run smoother and quieter and last longer for additional savings, Fry said.

Energy consumption on residential units can be reduced by 20 percent to 30 percent by installing PolarShield in home air-conditioning systems. Reduced friction and wear on the unit can run as high as 70 percent to 80 percent, the company stated.

PROA works with the same efficiency in automobile air-conditioning systems. Polartech has developed a variety of oil and transmission treatments for all types of machinery and equipment.

Fry is currently working with local heating and air-conditioning businesses to generate interest in the product and assist in training technicians to install PolarShield in new and existing units throughout the area.

PolarShield is a one-time, lifetime treatment, according to Fry. The retail cost per ton is $45. The homeowner can treat an average-size house for $150 or less, Fry stated.
