The Platte County Commission has overruled a quarter-cent sales tax for youth mental health services that was approved by a majority of voters in November.
The sales tax is designed to create a children's services fund to provide mental health services for youth.
Commissioners in the Kansas City metropolitan area cited a Missouri statute they say gives them the power to reject the results of the ballot measure.
"This is a special interest tax. Very few people in the county will benefit from this,” Presiding Commissioner Scott Fricker told KCUR. “And I think most Platte County citizens are in favor of taxes that benefit the general population.”
