This past weekend marked the grand opening for College Station Theaters in downtown Springfield.
It’s a return to the movie scene for the 50,000-square-foot building, which formerly housed a multiplex operated by Regal Cinemas and Hollywood Theaters before shuttering at the start of 2023, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
Tillman Redevelopment LLC, which owns the theater building and the downtown College Station development, offered a sneak peek week in advance of its Nov. 22 grand opening. “Wicked,” which finished at No. 1 over the weekend in the U.S. domestic box office, is among films now showing at the venue. The independent, first-run theater at 415 W. College St. is utilizing 10 of its 14 existing screens at its launch. Decisions on how best to use the additional screens are still to be determined, according to theater officials.
“It’s revitalizing downtown, we hope in a big way, and it lets people come downtown, walk around downtown and have plenty to do while they’re here,” said Curtis Killingsworth, College Station Theaters assistant general manager.
Killingsworth said he expects the movie theater will be a draw for those living in and north of downtown, as well as surrounding towns.
“This gets you a theater closer to a lot of people, and that’s huge. It’s an accessible feeder to a lot of people,” he said.
College Station Theaters is the fourth movie theater in Springfield, joining arthouse venue Moxie Cinema, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and AMC Springfield 11.
