Phoenix Home Care Inc. co-founder and CEO Phil Melugin is utilizing his company's services as he recovers from a "serious accident," according to company officials.

Brandi Crane, spokeswoman for the Springfield-based home health care agency, said Melugin had a "significant break and trauma to his pelvis" after an April 4 accident involving his horse.

"Phil was riding his horse when the horse was spooked by a couple of dirt bikes," Crane said via email.

A news release issued late last week indicated Melugin is "wheelchair bound for several weeks" after being treated at CoxHealth. Melugin is scheduled to meet with his surgeon next week, when he'll learn more about the timeframe with his wheelchair, Crane said.

After hearing about the accident, MacLachlan Construction Co. Inc. owner Rusty MacLachlan and his son Easton built a wheelchair ramp at Melugin's home, according to an April 9 Facebook post. The post indicated Melugin could not return home until a wheelchair ramp was built, per a CoxHealth order. MacLachlan, also a candidate for the Greene County Commission, is a friend of Melugin.

Melugin's Phoenix Home Care was among the honorees last year for Springfield Business Journal's Economic Impact Awards. The company reported $80.9 million in 2018 companywide revenue, with $20.1 million generated locally. More than 3,500 employees companywide provide in-home health care services. In 2019, Melugin also was a member of SBJ's class of Men of the Year.
