Philadelphia becomes first major US city with soda tax

Despite a multimillion-dollar campaign by the beverage industry to block it, Philadelphia yesterday became the first major American city with a soda tax.

Council members gave final approval to a tax of 1.5 cents per ounce on sugary and diet beverages.

Berkeley, Calif., which has a similar law on the books, has a much smaller population.
