Phelps County Bank, the company working to renovate the former YMCA building downtown, is expanding with the purchase of a former credit union headquarters in southwest Springfield.

Chris Wilkins, marketing officer for Phelps County Bank, confirmed the company purchased the BluCurrent Credit Union building at 1770 W. Sunset St. for undisclosed terms. At the building, Phelps County Bank intends to set up "full banking operations, including drive-thru banking for the location" by mid-2025.

Jared Commercial & Management LLC brokered the real estate transaction, said President and CEO Curtis Jared. A Jared Commercial real estate brochure, archived via LoopNet.com, for the nearly 21,000-square-foot property points to an asking price of $3.5 million.

A warranty deed for the property between Phelps County Bank and BluCurrent Credit Union is dated Jan. 2 in Greene County recorder records. A note amount is not listed in the warranty deed. The total appraised value for the property is listed at roughly $3.2 million on the Greene County assessor's website.

Casey Pyle, market executive and senior vice president in Springfield for Phelps County Bank, said via email that BluCurrent occupied the building through the end of February and has since moved.

BluCurrent previously operated its operations center out of the Sunset Street building since 2010. The credit union's new operations center opened last year at 4520 S. National Ave., a former Mercy Health Plans building, according to past reporting. BluCurrent's website additionally lists locations at 3216 S. Glenstone Ave. and 1607 W. Kearney St. in Springfield and 310 W. Mount Vernon St. in Nixa.

Phelps County Bank, which is based in Rolla, in 2023 purchased the former Ozarks Regional YMCA building in downtown Springfield at 417 S. Jefferson Ave. Renovations continue to transition the building into an office for Phelps County Bank, which has been operating out of a temporary space at 334 E. Walnut St.

Wilkins said demolition work at the former YMCA property has been completed, and the next phase of construction has begun with hopes of operating in the building in mid-2026.
