Diana Werner and Joyce Buxton, ASID, of Buxton-Werner Interiors, designed this project for Service Vending Company Inc. in Aurora, owned by Jerry Sumners.
Service Vending specializes in bulk vending in a 26-state territory. Its building has 32,000 square feet of warehouse space and 4,000 square feet of offices. A feature of the architectural design was the use of bright red, the company's corporate color, as an identifying element in the exterior window framing system. Richard Werner was the project architect.
A challenge was to marry the contemporary architecture with the client's desire for a warm interior reflecting his interests and personality. An outdoorsman, pilot and fisherman, Jerry Sumners wanted his collection of mounted fish mementos of his trips to Costa Rica and Canada displayed in the office.
The sage green wallcovering complements the tones of the fish scales. A custom area rug, designed by Werner and Buxton, incorporates the earthy greens and tans of the walls and the wood flooring, plus bold red elements that echo the window frames.
Executed by Bearden Rugs of Springfield, the rug's images of trees, fish and an airplane propeller reflect Sumners' interests. The custom maple desk, constructed by Billings and Associates, accommodates Sumners' preference for work habits everything within reach, just as it is in the cockpit.
