Personal greenhouses extend growing season

Posted online
Constructing a home greenhouse may be the answer for gardening enthusiasts who want to prolong the growing season, according to Jay Chism, an agronomy specialist with the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension.

“A greenhouse can (fill) a void when the weather will not allow outdoor activity,” Chism said in a news release. “It may also answer questions about starting a commercial greenhouse business without taking a large financial risk.”

Before construction can begin, several questions must be answered, including whether the gardener plans to purchase or build the greenhouse, and what types of heating, cooling and lighting systems will be used.

“You need to consider where the greenhouse should be located, your budget, how much time the greenhouse will demand, the proper steps to construction – including building permits – and what type of foundations and utilities are needed for the ongoing operation,” he added.

Depending on the materials used and whether a kit will be used, the price for a 10-foot by 12-foot greenhouse could range from $4 to $50, the release said.

“Contractors for construction will add significantly to the costs, plus site preparation and amenities such as heating and cooling systems and benches,” Chism added.

Greenhouse coverings, which may consist of poly film plastics, fiberglass reinforced plastics, polycarbonate glazing, acrylics and single- or double-wall tempered glass, are another cost consideration. Chism recommends poly film plastics or greenhouse plastics for gardeners on a budget.

“The greenhouse plastics have a life span of two to four years before replacement,” he said. “Greenhouse plastics also have a greater insulating factor.”

Aesthetics also should be considered. The style should match the architecture of the gardener’s home. And, for aesthetic purposes, freestanding greenhouses should be located parallel to the house and any accessory buildings.

“Survey results show that greenhouses can enhance the value of your property. To do so, they have to look like they belong there,” said Chism, noting that landscaping, such as gardens and border plantings also can help with aesthetics.
