Pentagon wants autonomous fighter jets to join F-35

The Pentagon announced this week it plans to bolster the U.S. Air Force with autonomous jets to fight alongside the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The U.S. Air Force Research Lab is working on the project that would turn older F-16s into unmanned fighter jets.

The Air Force already owns a fleet of the retired aircraft that were prepared for similar use as target drones by The Boeing Co. in 2013.

According to Fortune, the concept of remotely piloting unmanned planes dates back to the Vietnam War.
