Department of Defense officials say commercial airlines will help with the evacuation of Afghans and U.S. personnel from Afghanistan, as the U.S. activates for just the third time what is known as the Civil Reserve Air Fleet.
According to Fox Business, 18 aircraft – four from United Airlines – will transport people from "temporary safe havens and interim staging bases." The airlines will be compensated an undisclosed amount.
The CRAF was last used during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2002-03 and first used during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in 1990-91.
