Schaefer had been ill and died at a rehabilitation facility in Springfield, according to a news release. Visitation will be 6–8 p.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, 221 Malone St. in Branson, and funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Schaefer was mayor 1995-2007, the city’s biggest growth period, the release said. During his tenure, Branson city limits expanded from eight square miles to 20 square miles, and between 2004 and 2007, new construction in the city topped $583 million.
Schaefer was the first Branson mayor to be elected for six consecutive terms. He was defeated for reelection to a seventh term last year by current Mayor Raeanne Presley.
Schaefer recently was named a 2008 Missourian Award honoree and had been set to receive the award Sept. 27 in Jefferson City.[[In-content Ad]]
