Party City plans to close 45 stores this year.
The New Jersey-based operator of 870 party supply stores did not release a list of the locations.
The decision comes amid a global helium shortage, though the company is working to secure a new source.
"We believe this new source should substantially eliminate the shortfall we are experiencing at current allocation rates and improve our ability to return to a normal level of latex and metallic balloon sales," Party City CEO James Harrison said.
