Pappy's expanding with music venue, pub

Posted online

Grant Beach neighborhood restaurant and bar Pappy’s Place is in expansion mode.

Co-owner Wayne Rader said he purchased the building next door to the 943 N. Main St. restaurant for a planned music venue and pub.

Rader cited a need created by the recent closure of live music venue The Cellar in downtown Springfield.

"We're going to take over that spot," he said of the gap left in the music scene by The Cellar's closure. "I'm trying to hire their whole staff."

The expansion, dubbed Pappy's Pub, is projected to open in April, Rader said. Declining to disclose the cost of the building purchase, he said renovations would tally more than $100,000. Marc Snyder previously owned the building, according to Greene County assessor and recorder data.

"I have buyers from England and France, and they will be ordering old stuff out of pubs," Rader said, noting more than 120 bands have reached out with interest to play at the music venue.

The newly acquired building, Rader said, has had multiple uses throughout the years, including as a laundromat, shoe store, record store and antique store. Pappy’s Place is around 800 square feet, according to past reporting. The building next door is approximately 1,300 square feet, according to Greene County assessor records.

Wayne and Susan Rader purchased Pappy’s Place in late 2020, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. The restaurant known for its barbecue food also has a patio area where live music is played.
