NFL linebacker Luke Kuechly abruptly announced his retirement earlier this week.
Kuechly, 28, plans to exit the NFL with two years and $22 million left on his contract with the Carolina Panthers. During his career, he earned $63 million in salary, plus other cash from endorsement deals with Nike and PepsiCo.
"I still want to play, but I don't think it's the right decision,'' Kuechly said. “I thought about it for a long time. Now is an opportunity to step away with what's going on here."
It's unclear if Kuechly's injury history is a factor. He's had multiple concussions in the NFL.
