Drury men's basketball Head Coach Gary Stanfield is optimistic about his 2000-01 team that will combine both returning and new talent.
That combination is the task in front of Stanfield with nine new players on the roster and the loss of six of last season's players to graduation.
"We have some talented returning players and some good new players," Stanfield said. "Hopefully they'll blend together quickly in a timely fashion. We have reason to be optimistic."
The most notable reason for that optimism is the return of junior guard Matt Miller, the 27th ranked scorer in the nation last year with a 20.4 average and the Heartland Conference preseason Player of the Year pick. Miller is a product of Springfield's Parkview High School.
The only other returning starter for Stanfield, who is in his 10th year as Drury head coach, is junior guard Ke'Lan Mitchell. Senior Shon Eilenstein also brings playing experience, he said.
"The drills and practices are going well," Stanfield said. "We're enthusiastic and seem to be enjoying the experience."
The Panthers' first regular season game will be played Nov. 17 against Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan.
The Panthers have a high standard to maintain: the team is coming off a 22-6 season and is ranked No. 1 in the Heartland Conference.
"It's certainly an honor that we'll have to earn, every game," he said of the pre-season ranking. "It will be tough."
The key to holding the top spot, Stanfield said, will center around how many of the little things his team can master. He said things that don't get recognized or go in box scores such as blocking out, shot selection, communication, positioning and getting back on defense are vital.
Stanfield said he's looking forward to this year's season and the chance to again participate in Heartland Conference play.
"Conference games have a level of importance over nonconference games," he said. "You can win a championship when you're participating in conference games. Conference play allows you one more opportunity to get recognition for your team and individual players. It will also eventually provide another opportunity for post-season championship play."
The Panthers' starting lineup has not yet been determined.
