Panera Bread Co.’s website leaked millions of customer records – including names, email and physical addresses, birthdays and the last four digits of customer credit card numbers – for at least eight months before it was yanked offline earlier today, cybersecurity bloggers at Krebs On Security have learned.
The website for the American chain of bakery-cafe fast casual restaurants appeared to include plain-text data of any customer who has signed up for an account to order food online via PaneraBread.com. Security researchers estimate the breach at between 7 million and 37 million customer records.
After the news broke by Brian Krebs, the independent investigative journalist who runs KrebsOnSecurity.com, Fox Business also picked up the story. At the time of this post, Panera Bread’s entire website was offline.
Panera Chief Information Officer John Meister provided a statement to Fox: “Following reports today of a potential problem on our website, we suspended the functionality to repair the issue. Our investigation is continuing.”
