Tell us about your company.

James Décor was established in 1946 by W.F. James, who owned and operated it as a paint and wallpaper store, also specializing in custom window treatments, some furniture and accessories. In 1982, my husband John and I purchased the shop, which was then located in the Plaza Shopping Center at Sunshine and Glenstone. I continued to run the store in much the same way (that James did) while expanding the furniture and fabric lines. In 1998, John and I decided to build a shopping center, James River Place, on Republic Road, and relocate both of our businesses there. He owns and operates Ozark Adventures. After several years at the Republic Road location, I dropped the paint in order to expand our focus on furniture, accessories, custom draperies and interior design for both commercial and residential projects.

How did you become involved in interior design?

I have a degree in interior design, but after I married, I stayed at home with our daughters, Martie and Jacque, until they reached school age. When James Décor became available, I persuaded my husband that we should purchase the store and I could operate it. I was certain it would be only part-time. I realized very quickly that it would take full-time plus in order to succeed. It also helps to love what I do and to be blessed with great employees and an understanding husband and children.

What do you like best about your job?

I really love what I do. Working with and meeting people, getting to know my clients and shopping specifically for them at market at High Point and Dallas.

What are some of your most difficult professional challenges?

Keeping up with the Springfield market, knowing what we can display well in our showroom, and keeping away from trendy items that easily appear dated. Arranging the store is always challenging. We work hard to keep the vignettes looking fresh by incorporating new items as they arrive and as furniture is sold.

What do you think will be some of the hottest trends in interior design in 2005?

Interior glamour is back, including a touch of Old Hollywood with gold and glitz. New trends include elaborate drapery treatments with lots of trim, gold cornices, beaded pillows and lampshades, all of which add to the whimsical side of elegance. Accessories are a must to complete the look. When adding accessories, more is better. We carefully select our accessories and carry a large stock so our clients can find exactly what they’re looking for.

What are some “timeless classics” in interior design?

European, traditional and French country are classic and ageless designs. All allow old and new to be mixed to achieve a comfortable, yet elegant, room. Adding a bit of gold (mirror, lighting and picture frames) always adds sparkle.

Tell us about your family and your spare-time interests.

My husband John and I have been married 32 years. We have two daughters, Martie and Jacque. Oh, and we have three grand-dogs: labs Jade, Kahlua and Moca. In my spare time, I enjoy shopping with my daughters, who both live in St. Louis. I also love to read and travel.
