YOUR BUSINESS AUTHORITY
Springfield, MO
Tell us about your company.
Signature Bank was founded in June 1997 by 17 local business owners. Fourteen seasoned bankers started at the bank, which has grown to more than $280 million in total assets.
Our growth can be attributed to the personal relationships that our bankers have developed over the years with business owners and individuals in our local community. We say that Signature Bank is "where customers send their friends." We have three locations, Internet banking and access to more than 50 local ATMs via the Privileged Status network.
How did you choose the banking industry for your career?
I graduated from Drury University with a degree in business and economics. I wanted to be in a profession where I could use my degree and work with people. Banking has provided me that, as well as the opportunity to work with many different types of businesses.
What are some of the challenges facing banks now?
As bankers our challenges include interest rates, the economy and competition. With interest rates, it is managing the balance sheet in terms of growth and profitability. Although our local economy is somewhat insulated, the uncertainty of the war, along with the condition of the stock market, is challenging for everyone. Lastly, maintaining our customer relationships, along with competition; in a heavily banked market, always keeps us on our toes.
What's your general feeling about the U.S. economy right now?
As I mentioned, commencement of the war provides much uncertainty about the economy in the next few months.
Business nationwide has slowed, and many larger industries have been affected by that slowdown.
What is most rewarding about your work?
No doubt about it, the most rewarding part of my work is the personal relationships I have been fortunate to have with both customers and the people I have worked with.
Tell us about your family.
Gary Baumgartner, president of Baumgartner General Contractors Inc., is my husband. My parents, sister and her family are here.
Have you ever considered another career?
It is natural to consider making a career move, but nothing has ever appealed to me enough to make a change.
