Tell us about your agency.
The Southwest Missouri Office on Aging was created through the Older Americans Act of 1965. Our mission as a designated Area Agency on Aging is to be an advocate for older Missourians and to develop and coordinate services in our 17-county planning and service area that enhance the quality of life for older adults. We collaborate with compatible agencies and organizations to provide resources in an efficient and effective manner. Our office has been in existence since 1972.
How did you become involved in this field?
Just before I graduated with my master's degree in communications from Southwest Missouri State University, I was searching for a position that I would be able to utilize my skills. I really didn't plan on a career working in this field, but I walked into it and I absolutely feel at home.
What's your educational/professional background?
My educational background stems from 17 years in nursing. After leaving the field of nursing, I attended Ozarks Technical Community College where I received an associative arts degree, and then I was off to SMSU where I received a bachelor of science degree in organizational communication and public administration and a master's degree in communication.
What do you do?
My career is quite diverse. Ultimately, everything I do centers around being an advocate for older Missourians. I coordinate and develop various types of resources for our 17-county planning and service area, including public speaking events, developing our newsletter and brochures. In addition, I coordinate activities and special events for the SWMOA Foundation, such as our annual golf tournament and health fair, as well as developing and implementing planned-giving and annual-giving campaigns. Lastly, I am the coordinator of the Silver Haired Legislators for southwest Missouri. It is a statewide advocacy group.
What is the best part about your job?
I would have to say that knowing I am doing something every day of my life to benefit others. I really enjoy the diversity of my position and the different responsibilities that I have, as well as being allowed to be as creative and innovative as I want to.
What are some of the difficulties?
The most difficult part is knowing that there is a certain population of elderly out there that we are unable to reach. It is a daily challenge in keeping up with the changing legislation and regulations regarding not-for-profit agencies, but a challenge I enjoy.
Tell us about your family and your hobbies.
I have one wonderful son, Josh, who is a senior at Nixa High School. Being a sports mom, I attend my son's activities. I love to travel, all types of water activities and meeting new people. I am a movie buff, and I love to be confronted with new and exciting challenges.
