The Ozarks Literacy Council has hired Kathryn Pinkley to succeed Paula Shumaker as executive director. Shumaker resigned Dec. 30.
Pinkley holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Drury University and has a background in business and accounting. Her fundraising experiences include Taste of Springfield, Summit Preparatory School Trivia Night and Cider Days. Pinkley is a 12-year United Way of the Ozarks volunteer, including work for Ozarks Literacy Council as a certified basic literacy tutor and a preliteracy reader.
Her first day on the job is Feb. 15.
After eight years in the post, Shumaker said she resigned to focus on writing, including expansion of two e-bulletin services and articles that have been published in national magazines.
Ozarks Literacy Council, 430 South Ave., Ste. 200, served more than 200 adults and 9,000 children in 2008, and organization leaders expect 2009 numbers to be similar or higher. The organization's programs include one-on-one tutoring, outreach events and partnerships with other nonprofits, such as sending free books home with children who are part of Ozarks Food Harvest's backpack programs.
