Overland Park appears ready to approve Google Fiber plans

The Overland Park, Kan., City Council appears poised to sign off on two agreements with California-based tech giant Google that would bring high-speed Google Fiber to its residents, according to the Kansas City Star.

One agreement would allow Google Fiber to install network huts on city property, while a second would permit the company to use the city’s existing fiber optic network.

Google and Overland Park officials had reached a preliminary agreement last fall, but after some council members posed questions about liability issues, Google delayed its plans. The delay was thought by industry analysts to signal that Google would rather go to other cities that want high broadband speeds than fight with too much local regulation.
