Missouri's net general revenue collections are down 5 percent for the year so far after falling 44.8 percent in May. The state's year-to-date collections are $6.82 billion, compared to $7.18 billion at this time last year. In May, collections were $400.9 million, compared to $726.7 million in May 2008.
Sales and use taxes are down 6.5 percent for the year at $1.71 billion; they fell 21.4 percent in May. Individual income tax collections are down 1.5 percent for the year at $5.48 billion; they fell 24.4 percent in May. Corporate income and corporate franchise tax collections are down 13.2 percent for the year at $453.7 million; they fell 41.4 percent in May. All other collections are up 1 percent for year at $458 million; they increased 21.3 percent in May. Refunds, meanwhile, are up 7.3 percent for the year at $1.28 billion and increased a whopping 182.1 percent in May. The growth was due to individual income tax refunds being distributed quickly because of the transfer of federal stimulus dollars into the state's general revenue fund, Missouri Budget Director Linda Luebbering said.
Wanted: Stupid Human, Pet Tricks
"The Late Show with David Letterman" is holding casting calls at Branson Landing for the show's Stupid Human Tricks and Stupid Pet Tricks segments. Representatives of CBS affiliates KOLR 10, KSFM (Ft. Smith, Ark.) and KHTV (Little Rock, Ark.) will take auditions 11 a.m.-2 p.m. June 27 in front of the retail center's fountains. Selected participants will receive a free trip to New York, a payment for their appearance on the show and a chance to perform their trick on the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater in front of millions of "Late Show" viewers.
Another Dam Birthday
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Table Rock Dam providing hydroelectric power to the Ozarks. Dignitaries and those involved in the construction will celebrate at 2:15 p.m. June 14 on the overlook across from the Dewey Short Visitors Center on State Highway 165. Following the ceremony, which includes music by the Springfield National Guard Band, a film on the development of Table Rock Dam will be shown in the visitor's center auditorium. Free 30-minutes tours of the Table Rock Dam Powerhouse will be offered between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. June 13 and 14. Branson Mayor Raeanne Presley said the dam, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has created boating, swimming and fishing opportunities for area residents and the millions of visitors who come to Branson each year.
Slice of Nice
Rotaract Club of Springfield presented a $6,074 check to the Boys and Girls Town of Missouri. The money - proceeds from the club's annual winter party - will be used in Boys and Girls Town's Holiday Fund, which purchases prom dresses, class rings, caps and gowns and other items for residents. Rotaract, a Rotary-sponsored club for young professionals, also donated $1,200 to purchase new mattresses at Boys & Girls Town.
