Original Superman comic sells for record $3.2M

Posted online
In 1938, a man from West Virginia paid 10 cents for a copy of Action Comics No. 1 at a street-side newsstand. He put it in a cool, dark cedar chest, where it stayed, forgotten but still in pristine condition, for decades.

This weekend, that copy of Superman's introduction to the world sold for a record $3.2 million, according to CNNMoney.

The buyer hasn't been confirmed, but CNNMoney reports buzz in the comics world claims the winning bid was placed by ComicConnect.com, an online comics auction site.

Seller Darren Adams, who owns a comics store near Seattle, stated in a release that a portion of the auction proceeds will be donated to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Christopher Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in a series of movies in the 1970s and 1980s; he died in 2004.
