O'Reilly General Hospital, where Evangel University now stands, was the start of Springfield's Medical Mile. More than 44,000 wounded World War II soldiers were treated there between 1941 and 1946.

Above, Col. George B. Foster Jr., commanding officer of O’Reilly General Army Hospital, took time to visit with the patients.

An official postcard of the hospital reads, "O'Reilly General Hospital was named in honor of Robert Maitland O'Reilly, who rose to the rank of surgeon general of the Army. The beautiful and magnificent institution is built on a 152-acre tract of land donated to the government by the citizens of Springfield at a cost of $82,500."
