A power trio of media queen Oprah Winfrey, entertainment executive David Geffen and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison could come together to make a bid for the Los Angeles Clippers basketball franchise.
In a Wednesday interview with ESPN, Geffen said he and Ellison would run the team, while Winfrey would be an investor.
"Oprah is not interested in running the team," Geffen told ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap. "She thinks it would be a great thing for an important black American to own [another] franchise.”
Winfrey’s spokesperson later confirmed her investor interest.
The purchase plan is contingent on the NBA’s board of governors voting to force embattled owner Donald Sterling to sell the team and the Winfrey-Geffen-Ellison bid being accepted. Forbes has recently estimated the Clippers’ net worth at $6.2 billion.
