Opinion: Why Springfield stands out in the tech world

Posted online

The Springfield metro area is emerging as a hub for technology professionals and companies seeking opportunities, community and an exceptional quality of life. With its affordable cost of living, a burgeoning technology community, wide range of industries and top-notch connectivity, Springfield is quickly becoming a destination of choice for tech companies and talent.

One of the most compelling reasons for technology companies and professionals to consider Springfield is its remarkably affordable cost of living. According to recent data from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, Missouri had the sixth-lowest cost of living for 2024 of all 50 states. Springfield had the second-lowest cost of living amongst Missouri’s metro areas, trailing only our neighbors in Joplin.

Connectivity is crucial for technology companies and professionals, and Springfield excels in this area. The city boasts a robust and reliable fiberoptic internet infrastructure, with multiple providers offering high-speed broadband services. Gigabit-plus internet speeds are available in many parts of the city, ensuring that tech companies and professionals can work efficiently and stay connected with colleagues, clients and industry developments around the globe.

Moreover, Springfield’s central location provides convenient access to major transportation hubs. The Springfield-Branson National Airport offers daily flights to major cities, while the city’s proximity to Interstate 44 ensures easy road travel to nearby metro areas. This connectivity enhances Springfield’s appeal as a strategic base for technology companies and professionals that require seamless communication and travel options.

One of the most exciting aspects of Springfield’s tech scene is its rapidly growing technology community. The city is home to various tech-focused organizations and initiatives that foster collaboration, innovation and professional development.

These initiatives create a vibrant ecosystem that encourages tech professionals to engage with the community, share knowledge and collaborate on innovative projects. The sense of camaraderie and support within Springfield’s tech community is palpable, making it an ideal environment for both personal and professional growth.

Springfield’s technology community is not only growing but also highly engaged, offering numerous opportunities for connection and learning. Regular meetups, conferences and networking events provide tech professionals with platforms to exchange ideas, stay updated on industry trends and build valuable relationships.

According to the recent tech workplace survey by Springfield Women in Technology, many women expressed a deep commitment to their work and the tech field, with participants in focus groups stating they enjoy the problem-solving aspects of their jobs and are passionate about making an impact in their communities through technology. Springfield area women note a sense of community and support through tech groups or professional organizations outside of their immediate workplace, which is noted as a retention factor.

The city’s universities and colleges also contribute to the tech ecosystem by offering advanced degree programs, certifications and continuing education courses tailored to the needs of technology professionals and providing a pipeline of talent for companies to fill out their teams.

The tech startup culture is strong in the area, too, with events dedicated to startups. These include the Ozarks Startup Weekend. Additionally, Missouri State University’s Efactory has launched 250 companies with a $3 million fund, further supporting the local tech ecosystem. With a supportive community, skilled workforce and a culture of entrepreneurship, Springfield is rapidly becoming a hub for disruptive technologies.

With a supportive tech ecosystem, top employers and a rich array of resources for professional development, Springfield offers an exceptional environment for tech companies and talent to thrive. As the city continues to grow and evolve, it promises to remain a beacon for innovation and a magnet for technology companies and professionals looking to make their mark.
