Opinion: Ozarks' spirit lives on in 2014 class

Posted online
The 11th annual Springfield Business Journal Dynamic Dozen class is no slouch. In fact, a handful of this year’s honorees are repeat winners, marking their fifth, sixth and even seventh appearances on the list.

Following last year’s event, I penned a newsroom blog on Ozarks’ spirit. The feeling was evident in the room that evening, and as I read familiar names on the 2014 list, I know that same spirit and willingness to buckle down and get the job done is present in this year’s class.

Just shy of the top spot, this year’s No. 2 company, CoxHealth, posted 2013 revenue of $2.99 billon with 34 percent three-year growth. That’s billion with a “b,” not a number many companies can easily relate.

While the health care provider didn’t hit the top spot, they did earn a different D12 honor: most appearances on the list. Making the Top 12 in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014, CoxHealth holds the current record at seven appearances.

But CoxHealth shouldn’t get too comfortable in its spot – another health care provider is nipping at its heels. Bolivar-based Citizens Memorial Healthcare has landed a place on the list six times. Hitting No. 11 this year, CMH posted three-year revenue growth of 16 percent.

Monett-based technology firm Jack Henry & Associates Inc. also is in the mix, having made the list five times and coming in at No. 10 this year.

Purveyor of spices Red Monkey Foods has racked up four appearances in the dozen, hitting No. 8 this year and tallying impressive three-year revenue growth of 60 percent.

Other repeat honorees include this year’s No. 3 MaMa Jean’s Natural Foods Store LLC, which makes its third appearance, and No. 6 tech company JMark Business Solutions Inc., which made the list for the second straight year.

This year’s No. 1 company, Integrity Pharmacy LLC, joins another unofficial D12 club of sorts: the repeat winner club. Incredible Pizza Co. started the club with No. 1 rankings in 2007 and 2009 and debut D12 top company Russell Cellular joined with a repeat performance in 2010.

Posting almost untouchable three-year growth of 122 percent, the only thing more amazing is Integrity Pharmacy posted three-year growth of 156 percent, when it topped last year’s dozen.

Adding to the company’s unique story, the Integrity Pharmacy is a spin-off of Integrity Home Care, which also has taken home three Dynamic Dozen awards, including topping the list in 2006.

That’s Ozarks’ spirit hard at work.

Recognizing company’s goals would be for naught without a sound employee base. The Dynamic Dozen awards also recognize five individual honorees in the categories of Top Local Executive, Top Local Financial Officer, Top Local Sales/Marketing Professional, Top Local Human Resources Professional and an Employee of the Year.

Red Monkey Foods CEO Jeff Brinkhoff said it best during last year’s ceremony as he accepted the award and introduced his staff.

“Employees are on the wrong side of the balance sheet. They are not an expense; they are an asset,” he said.

Congratulations to all the 2014 Dynamic Dozen award-winning companies and individual honorees from the entire SBJ staff. It’s your Ozarks’ spirit that makes southwest Missouri a little better every day.
