The Hibiscus Jerk Hut
Gladstone Morrison and Jamie Bumgarner began serving Jamaican cuisine July 28 at The Hibiscus Jerk Hut, a food truck parked at 1107 Boonville Ave. Morrison was born and raised in Lucea, Jamaica, where he learned to cook at hotels. He brought his experience to the states as a chef in Biloxi, Miss., but when Hurricane Katrina came through, Morrison relocated to South Carolina and Florida to cook at resorts. In Springfield, he worked at Easterly’s Chuck Wagon and met Bumgarner, his fiancee, and they worked together in catering before opening Hibiscus Jerk Hut. Bumgarner said startup costs were $10,000, and they’ve signed a month-to-month lease for an undisclosed rate. With three employees, dishes include Jamaican, oriental and American cuisine, such as Jerk and curry chicken, lettuce wraps and chicken wings. Prices range from $5.50 to $9.50. Catering also is available, according to its website. Hours: 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Phone: (417) 319-4788. Web: TheHibiscusJerkHut.com

Coulee’s Bar & Grill
Coulee’s Bar & Grill opened April 21 at 5378 State Highway 265 in Branson. Owner Jason Doty invested $100,000 in the restaurant and signed a lease-to-own deal for the 3,500-square-foot building. The restaurant’s name comes from a term for flowing lava, and it’s demonstrated by the practice of rock grills heated to 650 degrees for guests to cook meats and vegetables tableside. Described as a fondue cooking experience without the oil, Doty said dinner dishes for the coulee stone range from $17 to $28. The menu also offers breakfast omelets, wood-fired pizzas and burgers. Coulee’s Bar & Grill has eight employees and adjusts its hours around the business for the night, Doty said. Hours: 11 a.m.–10 p.m. daily. Phone: 320-6029. Web: CouleesBarAndGrill.com

Gossamer Nail Studio
Licensed cosmetologist Jordan Adams opened Gossamer Nail Studio on July 24 in Sola Salon Studios at 1839-B E. Independence Ave., Studio No. 16. The 23rd tenant out of 30 rooms, Adams began leasing the 14-by-14-foot space in James River Towne Center for $195 per month. Gossamer Nail Studio offers pedicures, manicures, shellac and nail art. Adams does not work with artificial nails. “This is an all-natural experience,” she said. Two years ago, the company’s entry into Springfield was its first in the state. Hours: by appointment 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Wednesday and Friday and 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Thursday and Saturday.
