Open for Business: The Coffee Commons

Posted online

The Coffee Commons
The closure of one coffee shop in Strafford earlier this year led to the opening of another, as The Coffee Commons LLC launched on July 11. Mattea Weldon is owner of the 100 E. Pine St. business, which replaced Common Grounds Coffee & Cafe LLC. The 11-year-old Common Grounds closed in January, Weldon said, noting she signed a lease for undisclosed terms with building owner Michele Eden. Eden, who formerly owned Common Grounds, still owns Pine & Picks LLC, an event venue next door at 106 E. Pine St. Weldon declined to disclose startup costs for the 2,300-square-foot shop, which employs seven. She said past work experience included four years at Common Grounds, adding that in 2021 she opened Prancing Pony Espresso LLC, a coffee truck in Pleasant Hope that remains in operation. Weldon said she sources from Battlefield-based Copper Canyon Coffee Roasters for the shop’s coffees. The Coffee Commons also serves breakfast and lunch options, including pastries made in-house, along with quiches, sandwiches, soups and salads.

Silvercreek Exteriors
After debuting in 2023, Silvercreek Exteriors LLC moved June 1 to 3037 S. Kansas Expressway in the Kansas Station Business Park. The company provides comprehensive exterior improvement services for residential and commercial properties. It previously was located in Ozark at 1504 S. Third St., said Ryan Green, who co-owns Silvercreek Exteriors with Brian Williams. Its services include roofing, siding installation, window replacement, gutter systems, decks, exterior doors, sunrooms and storm damage restoration. Green declined to disclose lease terms or relocation costs for the 1,738-square-foot space. He said the company started as a siding, soffit and fascia installation business but has expanded into installing most everything that goes on the exterior of a building. Silvercreek Exteriors started with just the two founding partners, Green said, and has expanded to 10 office and field management employees, which spurred the need for larger space and the move to Springfield.

Barge’s Pizza
After Kevin Allen put his franchise shop of Rocco’s Pizza up for sale in Bolivar earlier this year, Jillian Scott said she and her husband Mike decided to purchase both the business and the 213 S. Main Ave. building that housed it. Now renamed Barge’s Pizza, the couple took over ownership May 1, she said, declining to disclose terms of the deal. The Scotts employ eight at the restaurant, which has seating capacity for 36. Scott said her husband has been in the food and beverage industry for over 20 years, including time as the food and beverage director at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar and as general manager of Sugarfire Smokehouse in Olivette. The menu at Barge’s Pizza includes sub sandwiches, salads, pasta, calzones and over 15 specialty pizzas, including The Barge, which has pepperoni, sausage, ham and bacon. Pizza prices range $7-$20, while weekday lunch specials, such as a mini calzone and drink, cost $8.
