Scratch & Co.
June 5 was the soft opening for Scratch & Co., a 7,000-square-foot restaurant on the first floor of the 10-story Plaza Towers at the intersection of Sunshine Street and Glenstone Avenue. Steve Belden and Trent Overhue are co-owners of the eatery via their company AMP Recreation LLC, which also oversees The Daily Blend coffee shop and Sunshine Event Center with its rooftop bar and patio at Plaza Towers. Belden declined to disclose startup costs for Scratch & Co., which he said employs around 60. Scratch & Co. seats roughly 125 people on its first-floor level, with an additional 60 seats on a covered first-floor patio. It also offers two private dining rooms. Belden said the menu highlights classic dishes from American cuisine and cultures around the world, made from scratch with quality ingredients. Entrees include beef stroganoff served with tortellini and three types of mushrooms and baked branzino with lemon asparagus risotto. He said local company Charmingly Cheesecake provides about half of the desserts on the menu. Prices range $8-$35.

Hometown Furniture
With shops in Springfield and Bolivar, Hometown Furniture has a new owner and a shortened name. Ryan Schuette purchased the business from Randy Herion for an undisclosed price. Schuette said the deal, which included buying the 16,000-square-foot building that houses the 4773 S. 135th Road store in Bolivar, closed April 28. The business formerly was called Hometown Furniture and Mattress, but Schuette said he shortened the name after taking ownership. However, he said it still sells mattresses, along with sofas, sectionals, recliners, coffee tables, dressers and tables, among other products. Aside from Bolivar, where the business originated, the company also has a Springfield store in leased space at 520 E. Battlefield Road. Declining to disclose startup costs or his three-year lease rate with landlord Kenny Morris for the 8,000-square-foot Springfield store, Schuette said he employs a staff of 10 between the two locations. Hometown Furniture also offers delivery, primarily in southwest Missouri.

Good Samaritan Boys Ranch
A May 22 ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the grand opening for a resource center at 504 E. Norton Road for the Good Samaritan Boys Ranch. Scotty Brown, director of marketing and communications for the nonprofit, said the center is aimed to help youth aging out of foster care into adulthood. Butler Construction Management LLC was general contractor and Kinetic Design and Development LLC was architect for the $1.4 million project funded in part by state appropriations and the Good American Boys Ranch Foundation. It is designed to store new and gently used furniture and household goods for use in the youth’s first apartments. With a 3,000-square-foot warehouse area and 2,000 square feet for office space, the building also serves as a hub of operations for community-based staff to engage with youth, donors and community members. Brown said a four-person staff offices at the center, led by Jayme Raynor, director of development. Officials with the organization say the resource center will help them to expand services to serve more people.
