Ammie Copeland opened barbecue and grilling retailer Pits N Grills LLC on Nov. 27 at 1920 E. Sunshine St. In 3,000 square feet leased for undisclosed terms from John Heitz, the Copelands sell barbecue grills, accessories, consumer and competition rubs and sauces, charcoal and a variety of grilling wood. Grill prices range from $30 for a Weber Smokey Joe to $3,000 for Evo grills and cooktops. The husband-and-wife team, the store’s sole employees, declined to disclose startup costs. Copeland said Pits N Grills also has an indoor range hood for demonstrations and classes, dubbed Flip and Sips, starting at $20, plus the cost of ingredients for family pizza-making classes. Grilling classes are $65 and competition classes are $195, with instruction from Brad Leighninger, head chef of the Kansas City Barbecue Society championship team Gettin’ Basted. Tamera Heitz-Peek said the roughly 120,000-square-foot building was designed by Overland Park, Kan.-based HNM Architects Inc. and constructed by DeWitt & Associates Inc. Named after original CMH board chairman and Bolivar attorney Kerry Douglas and his late wife Synda, the building houses the health care provider’s imaging, ambulatory surgery and breast care center in addition to a dozen specialty practicums, including new dermatology and endocrinology clinics.
