Oculum Works LLC
After 10 years working in photography and as a freelance computer animator, Kurt Dillow started his own 3-D photography company called Oculum Works LLC. Beginning on Sept. 27, he uses a Matterport Pro Camera to capture images of commercial buildings and residences and creates a 3-D virtual tour for companies and individuals to purchase and upload online. Dillow offers a basic package for $250-$350 and a full package at $350-$450 for buildings up to 3,000 square feet. He said companies with larger spaces are quoted individually. Also a licensed real estate agent with Carol Jones Realtors since September, Dillow said the agency sometimes refers customers to Oculum Works to help advertise homes for sale. The virtual tours, aka 3-D dollhouse views, are trending in real estate. Oculum Works is a Matterport service partner, and Dillow said his company’s website is still in the works.

The Law Store
Joplin-based The Law Store opened Oct. 15 inside the Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Supercenter at 3315 S. Campbell Ave. The Law Store offers such legal services as wills and estate planning, traffic tickets, family law, small-business law, personal injuries, elder law, real estate services, immigration and bankruptcy. The company offers a free first consultation visit and menu-style pricing from $49 to set up an employer identification number to $1,299 for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing. Michelle Hucke, the legal operation’s director of marketing and human resources, said the Springfield store employs three licensed attorneys and four assistants led by managing attorney and Regional Director Bryan Berry. Joplin attorney Edward Hershewe started The Law Store as a separate business to combat the view of traditional firms with unpredictable prices. The company opened its first two offices in May at Wal-Mart stores in Joplin and Neosho, and it has a goal of 25 within three years.

Lemons & Spice Catering Co.
Student-operated restaurant Cook’s Kettle on Sept. 23 changed its business model and its name to Lemons & Spice Catering Co. The kitchen at 200 W. Commercial St. is part of Victory Trade School, which gives students real-world application of culinary skills. Becca Brotherton, director of marketing and social enterprise, said the restaurant transitioned to a catering service to meet the changing needs of students and customers. She said the catering menu is geared toward corporate gatherings, private functions and child care centers. Prices are about $8-$12 per person. Once a month, students will prepare a “pop-up” style lunch with a set menu to highlight the recently learned cuisine. Brotherton said 13 students currently are enrolled.
