Temporarily closing in May 2024, the Midtown Carnegie Branch of the Springfield-Greene County Library District reopened June 9. The 397 E. Central St. branch underwent roughly $4.5 million in renovations and upgrades that, in part, provided a new library entrance, designed to offer accessible pathways to each floor of the library, including restored access to the elevator. Additionally, the 30,000-square-foot building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system was replaced and modernized to provide energy-efficient cooling and heating. A brick building in the library’s parking lot now also has a new loading dock in place to facilitate sorting of books for the Friends of the Library’s biannual book sale. Crossland Construction Co. Inc. served as general contractor for the project designed by Dake Wells Architecture Inc. Morgan Shannon, copywriter for the library district, said Eva Pelkey leads as manager of the 22-employee branch. Shannon said the project was aided by roughly $1.9 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Foreverbed
Mattress entrepreneur Brian Croft launched a new store in the Queen City on Aug. 30 under the Foreverbed brand. Croft, founder of Foreverbed, said an Oct. 9 grand opening is set for the store at 2714 S. Glenstone Ave. in Brentwood Center North. Croft said the store is designed as a luxury mattress atelier meant to rival European brands such as Hastens or Vispring. Also the operator of Croft Mattresses, Croft said the Foreverbed brand of mattresses are made in his Webb City factory. Croft Mattress also has two retail stores in Springfield and one in Joplin, he said, noting he also has a Queen City store under the Springfield Mattress name. The 2,500-square-foot Foreverbed store in Brentwood Center North fills space that previously housed outdoor gear retailer Howler Co. He said he signed a three-year lease with two three-year renewal options at $25 per foot in the shopping center owned by Jared Enterprises Inc. Croft said his business works with around 120 dealers in four states that carry the mattresses.

CMH Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic
A Citizens Memorial Hospital clinic in Bolivar has a new name and location after temporarily closing to move to its new home on Sept. 8 at 2520 S. Springfield Ave. Formerly named CMH Outpatient Pediatric Therapy, the Bolivar-based health care system renamed it CMH Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic. CMH spokesperson Charlotte Marsch said the clinic previously was in the hospital at 1500 N. Oakland Ave. but moved to a separate facility to make more room for hospital services. She said it fills 2,820 square feet in space formerly occupied by CMH Health & Wellness Clinic, which shuttered in 2024. Startup costs were $220,000, she said, declining to disclose lease terms. Marsch said LeAnn Henenberg leads a staff of six at the clinic, which provides occupational, physical and speech therapy for patients 18 and younger. Patients include those with autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, sensory integration and speech impairments.
