Scott and
Amy Kinsey opened math learning center Mathnasium of Springfield on July 1 at 1839 E. Independence St., Ste. W. Using Mathnasium Method’s three-step process, Scott Kinsey and four tutors assess a student’s math skills, customize the learning for each student and teach for understanding. Mathnasium tutors first through 12th-grade students in one-hour sessions. Kinsey, who previously worked as a continuous improvement leader for Kraft Foods, said franchise costs were roughly $80,000, and the Los Angeles-based company charges royalties of 10 percent up to $500 per month. Tutoring services range from $25 per session for members attending three times per week to $1,000 for an ACT preparation course, and a learning assessment and customization fee for first-time students is $200, he said. The business operates in 1,600 square feet previously leased by Ted E. Bear’s Toy Factory. Kinsey seeks to hire additional tutors before the school year begins. Mathnasium has over 600 centers, including nine in Missouri.

After $12,000 in startup costs, Small sells regular hot dogs for $2 and premium hot dogs for $4. Chili dogs, chips and drinks also are available. Small, who previously worked for corporate call centers Chase and TeleTech, said the business’ name and logo is in memory of his parents’ miniature dachshund.

Startup costs were roughly $75,000, and the 2,500-square-foot space near The Grand Village Shops is leased through Commercial One Brokers for $3,500 per month. The photo shop employs seven.
