Hurts Donut Co.Under T&C Ventures LLC, business partners
Tim and
Kas Clegg and
Ross and
Kim Tracy opened Hurts Donut Co. on Nov. 18 at 301 Park Central West. Tim Clegg, who with his wife owns the local Sno Biz franchise, said the doughnut shop’s moniker, derived from a homonym in a classic joke, came from a friend’s suggestion on Facebook after the business partners shot down some 1,000 names. The playful style extends to the product, with Hurts Donut’s line of Cereal Killer pastries – topped with Cap’n Crunch, Fruity Pebbles or Cocoa Puffs – and maple bacon long Johns or Bismarcks coated in M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces or Rainbow Nerds. With seven employees, Clegg said the business is building on the recent creative cupcake model and West Coast doughnut shop trends. The Cleggs are working full-time on the venture, while the Tracys hold day jobs – Ross at Arc of the Ozarks and Kim as a paralegal – but are still involved in operations. The business partners, who lease 1,600-square-feet from Bob McCroskey for $1,200 per month the first year, spent $20,000 in the startup for kitchen equipment and renovations. Hours: 24/7. Verizon WirelessVerizon Wireless opened Nov. 19 at 1286 E. Battlefield Road, the former Romano’s Macaroni Grill in the Fremont Shopping Center. With 6,400 square feet, the store replaced the 1155 E. Battlefield Road retail storefront at the intersection of Battlefield and National Avenue and has more room for interactive displays and live demonstrations of smart accessories and wireless devices, said spokesman
Mark Farnen. Renovations were handled by Kansas City-based general contractor WC Construction Co., with architecture work by Klover Architects, of Overland Park, Kan. Verizon officials declined to disclose renovation costs. The Macaroni Grill building was vacant since mid-2012, when bankruptcy proceedings by restaurateur Bruce Swisshelm forced its closure. Hours: 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Saturday and noon–6 p.m. Sunday. Phone: (417) 877-9377. Web:
