Herba Thea
After five months and $50,000 in renovations, Herba Thea opened Dec. 8 in nearly 4,000 square feet at 220 S. Campbell Ave. Organized under Keep On Truckin Tea LLC, Ed Strauch leases the space from Sam Freeman for $2,000 a month. Strauch and four employees offer brewed tea and coffee for $1.99 a cup and a light food menu with sandwiches ranging from Nutella and banana for $1.69 to a club for $4.29. Herba Thea, which is Latin for herbal tea, specializes in bubble tea with tapioca pearls, said Strauch, who brought Culver’s to Missouri when he opened the frozen custard and burger restaurant in 2000 on East Primrose Street. He operated the Culver’s franchise until 2005, then dabbled in home building and remodeling, and more recently made a run with an electric car conversion company called Electric Cars of Springfield. He said Herba Thea seats 100 and features live acoustic music on weekend evenings. Hours: 10:30 a.m.-–11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m.–1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
