Open for Business: Dapper

Dapper
Licensed cosmetologist Sean Brownfield on Aug. 19 opened Dapper, a throwback barbershop at 109 Park Central Square, inside Encore Gallery. Brownfield offers men’s haircuts and straight-razor shaves in a pre-1900s setting and sells memberships to the barbershop club. He developed the concept growing up in his parent’s Bolivar hardware store, where a group of retired men would congregate each morning around the wood stove, drinking coffee and playing cards. They’d reconvene in the afternoons at the barbershop, and Brownfield was known to join them to shoot pool and chat. He wrote Dapper’s business plan eight years ago, and the former general manager of Four Seasons Sunrooms took out a $35,000 city small-business development loan to launch the barbershop. He said 90 members pay the $90 monthly club fee for such perks as unlimited haircuts, a monthly steam-towel shave, two shoe shines and their own drawer in a private reserve cabinet to store liquor and personal belongings. Brownfield, who also worked 10 years as a platform artist for national hair shows, said startup cost $150,000 to cover product, refurbished 1895 barbershop chairs and period fixtures, including a Heer’s hatbox and a wooden back bar housed in the lobby of a Milwaukee bank controlled in the 1860s by Joseph Schlitz and other beer barons. Hours: 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday through Tuesday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 12:30–5 p.m. Saturday. Phone: (417) 720-1196. Web: DowntownDapper.com

American Dental Solutions
American Dental Solutions moved Aug. 15 to 2125 W. Kingsley St., where the company built a 12,500-square-foot dental office on three levels. Dr. Mehjabeen Zahirsha and her CEO husband, Sultan, founded the practice in 2007 and previously leased a dental suite at 3259 E. Sunshine St. With 14 exam rooms for imaging, X-rays and orthodontics, American Dental employs 16 in the new building and treats more than 60 patients a day,  Sultan Zahirsha said. The couple invested $2 million in the project, including the acquisition of 2.33 acres. Hours: 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.–noon Friday. Phone: (417) 881-9988. Anthem Marketplace
Croley Insurance and Financial launched an Anthem Marketplace retail store Oct. 1 at 1943 S. Glenstone Ave. In partnership with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, General Manager Bryan Trantham and two customer service representatives help individuals and small-business groups shop the health care marketplace, said agent Trevor Croley. He said the store targets individuals seeking federal subsidies and tax credits under the Affordable Care Act, noting a family of four making up to $90,000 could be eligible. However, he said if one family member’s employer offers an affordable plan – when the employee’s share of the premium does not exceed 9.5 percent of the household income – the individual is disqualified. Croley said the 1,000-square-foot store is in a one-year lease for an undisclosed amount. Hours: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon–4 p.m. Saturday. Phone: (888) 830-3520.
