A Galloway Village coffee shop has changed hands for the second time in as many years, as the owners of Republic-based Black Lab Coffee Co. opened their third location Sept. 7. Black Lab owners, husband and wife Case Howard and Christa Stephens, purchased Springtown Coffee Co., 3541 S. Lone Pine Ave., in August from Van and Jess Malter for an undisclosed price. Howard said opening a shop in the Galloway Village neighborhood was a long-term interest. The 900-square-foot store employs two, he said, declining to disclose terms of its lease with landlords Jeff and Amy Haymes. The Malters purchased the business in 2020 from previous owners Justin and Allicyn Hollis, who started Springtown in 2019. Black Lab’s menu includes hot, iced and frozen coffee drinks named after dogs, such as the Bulldog and Goldendoodle. The Republic company, which opened its first location in 2018, expanded to downtown Springfield in December 2020 when it brought Black Lab to 300 W. McDaniel St.

Corner 21 Chinese Cuisine
Jiapeng Lu and Yuming Han opened Corner 21 Chinese Cuisine on April 24 at 1369 E. Sunshine St. Lu said he originally wanted to create a menu of mostly ramen, but Han convinced him there was a need for authentic Chinese food in Springfield. Corner 21 is Lu’s first venture in the restaurant business, and Han brings over 30 years of culinary experience from the St. Louis area to the five-employee restaurant. Lu said before he and Han began Corner 21, the building used to house Rice House, which was owned by Lu’s brother. Lu bought the business in September 2020, created Corner 21 and started remodeling the building to fit his vision. He declined to disclose lease rates and startup costs. The menu includes noodles, pork, beef, and seafood dishes with prices ranging $8-$16.

Hero Ride Shop
John and India Visser moved last year to Marshfield from Southern California and became first-time business owners with the July 26 opening of Hero Ride Shop. The husband-and-wife business partners own the bicycle and skateboard shop just east of the Marshfield square at 265 E. Washington St. John Visser said they invested roughly $100,000 to launch the venture, including the purchase of the building. Hero Ride Shop offers sales, repairs, parts, safety equipment and accessories for brands including Redline, Raleigh and Diamondback, according to its website. Visser said his past work experience in California includes building race motors for motorcycle industry companies Big Gun Exhaust and FMF Racing. When searching for a business venture, Visser said he and his wife, who also is an agent for Case Real Estate, noted the absence of a local bicycle and skate shop in Marshfield and wanted to fill the void.
