Downtown Springfield's newest bookstore, Well-Fed Head Books, opened Oct. 2 at 331 S. Campbell Ave. Owners Mike Sowers and Beth Buczynski (pictured) renovated 3,500 square feet in the 110-year-old building that formerly housed the Dungeons of Doom haunted house. The general used bookstore carries 10,000 titles, which Sowers hopes to increase to 50,000. It is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. A grand opening event is fittingly planned for Oct. 31, considering the building's previous use, Sowers said.
TravelNow.com moved June 16 to World View Center, 4124 S. McCann Court. The Springfield-based online travel agent operated from five floors in the McDaniel Building downtown since it joined the dot-com craze in 1995. "We are able to run more efficiently now," said Amy Tindle, general manager. "It has allowed some crossover between departments." The new site also provides on-site parking for its 140 employees, which work around the clock. TravelNow leases the space from Springfield developer Bill Jester.
The need for a larger facility spurred Mathews & Associates Inc.'s Sept. 1 move to 1631 W. Elfindale St., owner Fred Mathews said. Mathews said the company constructed the new 8,100-square-foot office after selling its 3,000-square-foot building at 1661 W. Elfindale St. The result is larger employee workspaces and storage areas. The firm, which specializes in civil engineering, land surveying and transportation, has 16 employees.
Nutrition & Fitness opened April 1 at 2902 S. Campbell, Ste. D. Owner Kevin Walker sells health products like fat burners, protein powders and vitamins and minerals in the front end, while personal training is offered in a workout area in the back of the store. It is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
