Lavern Phillip Ulesich opened Custom Metal Studs Inc. at 1900 E. Dale on Aug. 1. Ulesich and three employees build custom metal studs that go into drywall. Ulesich typically fills orders ranging from $750 to $40,000 for studs for construction jobs, most of which are commercial. The Wisconsin native used a bank from his home state to finance the more than $250,000 in start-up costs. Ulesich said his biggest asset in competing with larger metal stud makers is his personal, flexible service. Hours are 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment.
