Paul and Tammy Spangenberg opened Pastry Cafe on March 11 at 2101 W. Chesterfield Blvd., Ste. 104-A, in Chesterfield Village. They prepare pastries, cookies, pies, cakes and breads fresh every morning in a space formerly occupied by a Subway sandwich shop. Paul Spangenberg said they spent about $65,000 on equipment and supplies to start the business. Hours: 7 a.m.–6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday. Phone: (417) 889-5577.

www.vchouseplans.com

Julie Higgins launched www.vchouseplans.com on March 1. The Ozark-based online business, a division of Higgins Marketing LLC, serves as a broker for residential architects seeking to sell their plans. Architects can post their plans for free. If the plans are sold to a homeowner, builder or developer, the architect pays an undisclosed percentage to Higgins. Also, homeowners, builders and developers can freely request plans. Architects would then bid to win the job. Higgins, a Springfield Business Journal 2005 Most Influential Women honoree, also started area businesses Julie’s Chewies Gourmet Cookies and Euro World Design. Hours: 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on call weekends. Phone: (417) 581-3607.

Dairy Scoops & Deli

Vince and Kim Hamilton opened Dairy Scoops & Deli on Nov. 9 at 1724 N. Glenstone Ave. The couple serves hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken salad pitas, barbecue beef or pork wraps and ice cream in a building built in 1953 for Dairy Queen. Hours: 10 a.m.–10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.–11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Sunday. Phone: (417) 368-0251.

The Turner Center

CoxHealth on April 22 rededicated the Medical Arts Center, 1000 E. Primrose St., as The Bill and Ann Turner Women’s and Children’s Center. The 20-year-old building was renamed in honor of Bill and Ann Turner’s donation of an undisclosed amount for the $1.5 million renovation, which included a new external entrance, a boutique, enhanced consultation services for The Women’s Center, the addition of a 14-bed pediatric urgent care unit, new signage, revamped common area and restrooms, and a new garden. The renovations were part of the Centers of Excellence concept CoxHealth adopted in 1997 and first implemented in 2004 with the rededication of the Cox Medical Plaza 2 building as the Hulston Cancer Center. The Turner Center doesn’t have set hours, according to spokesman Chris Whitley. Phone: (417) 269-3000.
