Smitty's Chimney Sweep & Stove

Vernon and Gail Smith, owners of Smitty's Chimney Sweep & Stove, opened a shop and showroom Aug. 1 at 4535 W. Chestnut Expressway. Although Smitty's Chimney has been doing business in the area for more than 10 years, there was no fixed location. Vernon Smith calls his previous chimney-cleaning operation "three men and a truck." The new location offers heating stoves by Country Flame and Magnum, with models fueled by wood, pellets or dried feed corn. A complete cleaning and inspection on most chimneys runs $95, or $105 for those with an insert; Smith recommends annual cleanings. Hoover Music Academy

Hoover Music Co. added Hoover Music Academy on Sept. 5 at 500 S. Jefferson Ave. The academy offers individual and group classes on music theory and appreciation, ensembles, and clinic and master classes taught by Hoover Music Co. instructors and other area professionals. Prices range from $3 to $20 per hour based on class size and level of instruction. Hoover Music Co. was founded in 1912 by H.L. Hoover. Current ownership - a family corporation headed by President Brian Hoover - is the fourth generation of Hoover owners. The music instrument and equipment store, 440 S. Jefferson Ave., is located across the street from the academy. Hours: Classes are scheduled 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Phone: (417) 862-3573.

Deep 6 Marine Maintenance

Jack Mefferd opened Deep 6 Marine Maintenance on June 1. Although the business is located at State Park Marina on Table Rock Lake, Deep 6 also works on Taneycomo and Bull Shoals lakes. The business performs hull and topside boat cleaning and maintenance, propeller repair and replacement, and moves docks to fit changing water levels. Hull cleaning rates are based on the length and width of the boat, starting at $4 per linear foot. Mefford has 18 years of experience, working for a number of marine maintenance companies.
