Wal-Mart
Phase I of Springfield’s fifth Wal-Mart Supercenter opened June 11 at 1923 E. Kearney St. The store replaces the traditional Wal-Mart at that site, which opened in 1978, according to corporate spokeswoman Carrie McKnight. The first phase includes a wider variety of general merchandise and limited grocery options, along with an expanded lawn and garden center.
The new store features energy- and water-saving measures such as skylights that harvest daylight and freezer cases with light-emitting diodes and sensors that automatically shut off the lights when not in use by customers. The second phase, which will add a full grocery section, is under construction and should open in early 2009. Hours: 24-hours daily. Phone: (417) 865-4545.
