Volunteers for Outdoor Missouri Inc.
Volunteers for Outdoor Missouri Inc. launched in April and completed its first trail-building project in May. Founder and CEO Robert Crampton and his team completed the first phase of the Greater Ozark Audubon Trail at Lake Springfield Park. The nonprofit corporation gathers and trains volunteers to build and maintain accessible, durable and sustainable trails throughout Missouri, according to www.vfom.org. Volunteers are given a short trail-building class and further instruction as they work. Crampton, who has 40 years of business and nonprofit experience, said he formed the group with the help of his wife, Ann Books, because he believes that improving Missouri's trails by using local volunteers will help improve tourism. Crampton estimates that startup costs were $4,000, and he's pursuing donations and grants, including a $20,000 grant from Tom's of Maine. The group holds public meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at the Library Center. The organization's mailing address is PO Box 3088, Springfield, MO 65808. Phone: (417) 886-8677.
