Toss-Across

Toss-Across, a restaurant that specializes in fresh-cut salads, sandwich wraps and fruit smoothies, opened Dec. 16 at 431 S. Jefferson Ave., Ste. 104, according to marketing manager and investor Christine Moses. The eatery is a franchise owned by Keith Lawson through Three Island Tours LLC. It is the first local franchise for Springfield-based franchisor Salad Kings Inc., in which Lawson and Greg Roberts are partners. Roberts is the Salad Kings corporate trainer for Toss-Across franchises; there is one other, in Texas. Moses said the Toss-Across concept is built around fresh-tossed salads, chopped in front of customers on 300-pound butcher blocks with mezzaluna knives, which are double-handled with half-moon-shaped blades that rock back and forth. Its cups, bowls and eating utensils are biodegradable and made from plant materials. Hours: 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Phone: (417) 865-8677.

Gary Fenton, CPA PC

Gary Fenton moved his six-year-old certified public accounting practice Dec. 1 to 4650 S. National Ave., Ste. D-1. The South National Office Plaza space is leased from Bill Reed, said Fenton, who had operated from 305 E. Walnut St. in the Vandivort Center. The company's seven employees outgrew that space after a December 2008 merger with CPA Sam Parsons. The practice performs accounting, payroll and tax work primarily for small- and medium-size businesses. Hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday through tax season, with after-hours appointments available. Phone: (417) 865-2323.

Nightworks Lighting LLC

Shawn and Kaarie Roberts on Jan. 2 opened Nightworks Lighting LLC, installing aesthetic lighting systems. "We accentuate the architectural features of a home or building - water features, landscaping, pathways, things of that nature," Shawn Roberts said. The business is based in the couple's Ozark home, and the installation work is done on-site for commercial and residential customers. Shawn Roberts previously owned Creative Outdoor Lighting, which he sold in 2006. For the last three years, he has been importing, developing and manufacturing lighting system products through Lightworks Distribution, a separate company the Robertses own. Shawn Roberts said Nightworks Lighting uses technology, including the Nightscaping brand, aimed at consuming less energy. An average system starts at $1,200, he said. Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Phone: (417) 882-7305.Springfield Business Journal brings you new businesses each week.
