Online sales overshadow stores in 4-day shopping frenzy

Deep discounts wooed more than 154 million shoppers from Thanksgiving Day through Sunday, up from 151 million last year.

According to the the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, 43.8 percent of consumers shopped online during the four-day span, a 4.2 percent increase from last year.

Black Friday sales online topped $3 billion for the first time. That's 21.6 percent above last year's total.

While 40 percent of consumers shopped at a store during the holiday weekend, that was down 3.7 percent from last year.
